<image:title>Impact Stories Blog - A reflection fromAman Lara on International Women's Day 2026</image:title>
<image:caption>Earlier this year, two women arrived in Canada. They had been students once bright, hopeful, full of plans. They had found in each other something they had to keep hidden to survive. When that was no longer possible, they ran. The journey that followed was long, uncertain, and at times terrifying. There were moments when the pathway forward was not clear, when the systems meant to help them could not, when the outcome was genuinely unknown. They arrived anyway. They are safe. They are beginning again. We are sharing their story in full this week -- because they have asked us to, and because we believe it deserves to be heard. But today, on International Women's Day, we want to share something they said that stopped us in our tracks: "You may not know us personally, but your kindness reached us across borders and saved our lives." That is what this work is for. And it is what is most at risk right now.</image:caption>

<image:title>Impact Stories Blog - A reflection fromAman Lara on International Women's Day 2026 - The Women Still Waiting</image:title>
<image:caption>Aman Lara's Path to Protection initiative exists for the women the headlines do not reach -- serving women, girls, and at-risk youth across conflict zones and displacement corridors worldwide. Emergency legal assistance. Safe shelter. Secure transit. Trauma-informed psychosocial support. For those who have genuinely run out of other options. Every week, more than 100 individuals and organizations reach out to us -- because they have tried everything else, and we are what remains. Each request represents a person. A family. A life waiting to hear whether we can say yes. For a long time, we have been able to say yes. That is what we are most proud of. And it is what is most at risk right now. <image:title>Impact Stories Blog - A reflection fromAman Lara on International Women's Day 2026 - An Honest Ask</image:title>
<image:caption>We are not writing this to sound an alarm. We are writing it because the people who support this work deserve honesty and because the women still waiting deserve advocates willing to say plainly what is at stake. As of March 15th, we are facing a significant operational funding gap. Without bridge support, we will be making difficult decisions about staffing and case intake that will have real consequences for real people. The ask is simple. If you are in a position to give, please give before March 15th. Every dollar goes directly to the operational capacity that makes everything else possible the case managers, coordinators, and protection advocates who are the pipeline through which this work flows. Every donation is eligible for a Canadian charitable tax receipt. If you represent a foundation, company, or philanthropic fund aligned with gender equity, human rights, or refugee protection we would welcome a conversation. And if you cannot give right now, please share this. The women who need advocates are not all on our mailing list. Neither are all the people who might become one.</image:caption>

<image:title>Impact Stories Blog - Reflecting on 2025: Compassion in Action, Even in Uncertain Times - Dear Friends,</image:title>
<image:caption>Season’s Greetings from Aman Lara. As we come to the end of the year, I want to express my sincere gratitude to you, our supporters, partners and community. Your trust in Aman Lara and your decision to stand with us, even in the face of extraordinary risk and displacement, have meant everything in a year marked by profound humanitarian need. Throughout 2025, conflict and instability continued to upend lives across the globe. At the same time, charities and humanitarian organizations everywhere faced growing funding pressures and uncertainty. Like many organizations, Aman Lara experienced this firsthand. The conclusion of a major government-funded Afghan Safe Passage project required us to make difficult decisions, including reducing our core team. This painful transition meant saying goodbye to deeply committed colleagues who played an integral role in helping thousands of Afghan families reach safety.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I would be remiss not to recognize the extraordinary commitment of Aman Lara’s staff, volunteers, and Board. This year, their efforts helped secure Aman Lara’s charitable status — strengthening our ability to steward your support with transparency, accountability, and care. Having served alongside many dedicated teams throughout my career, including in the Canadian Armed Forces, I can say with confidence that few match the depth of commitment shown by the people behind Aman Lara. The organization’s strength lies not in its size, but in its proximity to the communities we serve, its ability to adapt quickly, and its deep sense of responsibility to act with integrity and purpose. As we look ahead, your continued generosity allows this work to carry forward — translating compassion into action when it is needed most.</image:caption>

<image:title>Impact Stories Blog - Uniting efforts to create a survivor-centred ecosystem of care for gender-based violence - The Human Cost of Gender-Based Violence Across Conflicts</image:title>
<image:caption>Across Afghanistan, decades of conflict have hardened into a system of gender apartheid. Four years since the Taliban takeover, waves of restrictions have stripped them of their rights and dignity, and not one has been reversed. In this reality, young girls continue to be pushed toward forced marriage, one that their families hope will offer economic relief and social protection. Poverty has left them with little choice, but the consequences are devastating: early pregnancy, heightened risk of violence, preventable deaths in childbirth, and a generational cycle of inequality that traps women and girls in lives defined by coercion rather than choice. Thousands of kilometres away, in the Darfur region of Sudan, besieged by the Rapid Support Forces, a mother fights for survival in a landscape where hunger and sexual violence are wielded as weapons of war. Her body, frail from famine, is pushed to its breaking point as she risks rape and trafficking each time she leaves home to gather firewood or water. Her children — skeletal, exhausted, and hungry — echo the brutality of a conflict that targets women with deliberate, systematic cruelty.</image:caption>

<image:title>Impact Stories Blog - Uniting efforts to create a survivor-centred ecosystem of care for gender-based violence - Why Collaboration Matters</image:title>
<image:caption>In the face of this complex crisis, it is clear that no single organization can dismantle the structural causes of GBV. Yet within this daunting landscape lies a powerful opportunity: coordinated, gender-sensitive, survivor-centred action. When organizations, governments, and civil society work together, they create a virtuous cycle of intervention, healing, and empowerment. This belief anchors Aman Lara’s Path to Protection initiative. Recognizing the intersecting and deeply entrenched barriers women, girls, and at-risk-youth face in conflict, we created a gender- and youth-responsive protection stream within our Global Refugee Support & Safe Passage Program to provide life-saving protection to those experiencing violence and systemic exclusion.</image:caption>

<image:title>Impact Stories Blog - Uniting efforts to create a survivor-centred ecosystem of care for gender-based violence - As the 16 Days of Activism begin, from Afghanistan to Sudan to Myanmar and countless other places where GBV is spoken about in fear and survivors are silenced, we stand with all the victims and survivors. We refuse to look away from the systems — rules, norms, and power structures — that continue to legitimize violations of women’s bodies, voices, and futures.</image:title>
<image:caption>Aman Lara’s Path to Protection initiative is already saving lives — but the need has never been greater. Requests for help are rising, and every case requires intensive, time-sensitive support: legal assistance, shelter, safe movement planning, documentation, and trauma-informed counselling. To meet this demand, we need partners who are willing to join us. Your contribution directly strengthens our ability to respond quickly when a survivor reaches out for help. Together, we can break the silence and build safer futures for those who need it most. On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we invite you to stand with us.</image:caption>

<image:title>Impact Stories Blog - Why small humanitarian organizations matter more than ever - In a world plagued by economic, social, and environmental crises, small humanitarian organizations are the bridge between good intentions and real impact. Their agility and human connection often mean the difference between delay and decisive action — between despair and hope.</image:title>
<image:caption>Across the globe, we’ve seen this truth play out time and again. In Sudan, for example, grassroots networks — unrestrained by bureaucracy and rooted in lived experience — are leading the humanitarian response after the collapse of state systems. Local professionals, students, and volunteers who know the language, the risks and the realities are saving lives where larger institutions cannot. This effectiveness is not a coincidence; it’s by design. Smaller organizations thrive because they are close to the communities they serve. They move quickly, adapt constantly, and listen deeply — to those in need, to those who give, and to the moment in front of them. Their strength lies not in scale, but in connection.</image:caption>

<image:title>Impact Stories Blog - Why small humanitarian organizations matter more than ever - When a young woman faced forced marriage to a Taliban member, our team mobilized swiftly but carefully — coordinating on-the-ground resources, assessing risk, and waiting for the right moment to act. When the time was right, we established safe corridors and brought her home to Canada.</image:title>
<image:caption>When a brother and sister from a persecuted ethnic group were separated as children, our local networks helped them reunite — restoring not just their family but their future. When the Shah family, targeted for assisting Canadian missions, needed urgent evacuation, we secured their safe passage and supported their resettlement in Canada so their daughters could attend school and dream freely once again. Each of these stories began with a single act of trust — from someone who believed that small organizations can deliver significant impact.</image:caption>

<image:title>Impact Stories Blog - Why small humanitarian organizations matter more than ever - Giving Tuesday: A chance to make your impact count</image:title>
<image:caption>Philanthropy, at its heart, is not about wealth; it’s about will —the quiet resolve to act when it matters most, to turn empathy into agency. As global crises grow more complex, the quiet determination of individual givers across Canada reminds us that change begins with choice. Each donation, no matter the size, fuels a network of care that restores lives and reaffirms shared humanity. This Giving Tuesday, December 2, join the global movement for good. Ask yourself: What kind of impact do I want my compassion to have? If your answer is long-term, life-saving, and deeply human, then your values already align with Aman Lara’s mission. We invite you to stand with us — to help close the gaps between crisis and recovery, between danger and dignity.</image:caption>

<image:title>Impact Stories Blog - A grim anniversary: Four years after Kabul’s fall, the need hasn’t gone away</image:title>
<image:caption>The fall of Kabul also marked the beginning of the institutionalization of gender apartheid in Afghanistan, a grim echo of Afghan women’s distress, fear and hopelessness as the Taliban marched on Kabul with a determination to erase women’s presence, voices, and participation in public life and undo the decades of progress made in favour of their education and fulfillment. Classrooms closed. Jobs lost. Voices silenced. The return of the Taliban signalled not just a political shift, but a full-scale erasure of women from public life. Alongside them, ethnic and religious minorities, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and anyone affiliated with the former government, Western institutions and governments, the media and civil society have become targets in a campaign of systematic repression. The effects of climate change exacerbate every other hardship Afghans face. The country is enduring one of the worst droughts in decades, to the point where Kabul risks becoming the first city to run out of water. Four consecutive years of below-average rainfall have decimated crops, dried riverbeds, and driven millions to the brink of famine. In rural areas, families are selling their last livestock to survive, while in cities, millions are at risk of starvation and subsist on meagre sustenance like bread and tea. Climate change is not a distant threat here — it is a daily, grinding reality that compounds every other crisis. In this context, forcing Afghans to return is not only impractical, it defies reason and basic humanity. Against this backdrop, millions of Afghans are at imminent risk of deportation from countries they once called home. They are dreading their return to a homeland where over half of the population relies on humanitarian aid to survive, and where struggling infrastructure, broken social services and a devastated economy delegitimize the Taliban’s ability to support the mass reintegration of Afghan refugees.</image:caption>

<image:title>Impact Stories Blog - Building the future of global refugee protection sustainably, inclusively, and equitably - Think about the life of a refugee in the current world order. What comes to mind?</image:title>
<image:caption>For me, the image lies in plain sight. We see it in the daily flood of messages we receive from refugees stranded in overburdened host countries, suspended in a state of uncertainty. Their pleas are urgent, often desperate. But it’s the messages from the most vulnerable — girls, women, and LGBTQIA+ individuals that strike deepest. Their supplications reflect the terrifying prospect of being forced back to places where their very identities place them in danger, gender-based violence and persecution are the norm, and survival is never guaranteed. This year’s World Refugee Day compels us to reflect on the lives of millions of displaced people caught amidst intensifying geopolitical tensions, climate-driven conflicts, rising fragility, conflict and violence, and looming deportations threatening to upend their hard-earned livelihoods and imperil their return to countries on the brink of humanitarian disasters.</image:caption>

<image:title>Impact Stories Blog - Building the future of global refugee protection sustainably, inclusively, and equitably - Towards a multisectoral and contextualized refugee response</image:title>
<image:caption>Addressing today’s displacement crises requires a multisectoral approach that is tailored, contextualized, and responsive to the evolving needs of refugees. Forced displacement is increasingly a protracted phenomenon, rooted in complex and overlapping crises that are often conflict or disaster-induced. The refugee experience is not uniform. Gender, age, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and other identity factors profoundly influence an individual’s risk and access to protection. Notably, women and children are disproportionately impacted by forced displacement and face increased risks of exploitation and abuse, while LGBTQ,+ individuals have unique vulnerabilities that exacerbate their persecution and marginalization.</image:caption>

<image:title>Impact Stories Blog - Building the future of global refugee protection sustainably, inclusively, and equitably - The path forward demands collective action</image:title>
<image:caption>Since August 2021, Aman Lara has supported the evacuation of 7,196 individuals from Afghanistan, with 5,811 successfully arriving in Canada to begin new lives in safety. These efforts have been made possible through a combination of direct action, staff and volunteers, collaboration with partners, and the generous support of government-funded initiatives, organizations, and individuals. One of our current initiatives, Horizon Hope, shows what’s possible when targeted support is in place. As a direct example of our second pillar, Economic Empowerment and Integration, this initiative has engaged over 100 skilled Afghan refugees, identifying top candidates and matching them with meaningful job opportunities. These efforts will enable resettlement and long-term integration within Canadian society. Yet, without long-term investment and cross-sector partnerships, scalable and durable solutions to protect the world’s most vulnerable remain out of reach. Without action, the initiatives and systems we’ve built and the people they protect risk falling through the cracks. To sustain the path forward, we need renewed investment — not just to grow, but to ensure this critical work continues.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Advocacy remained at the heart of our work. From the Spring Metropolis Conference in Montreal to the recent Conference Board of Canada’s Immigration Summit in Ottawa, our participation in these crucial discussions ensured that the voices of displaced populations remain at the forefront of global and national priorities. These platforms also allowed us to bring our expertise and insights into conversations on inclusion, retention, and the vital role of immigration in enriching global and local communities. A tribute to our team In this year of constant change, the unwavering dedication of our volunteers, staff, and Board of Directors was pivotal to fulfilling our mission. Their tireless efforts — often at great personal sacrifice — are the backbone of Aman Lara’s impact and enabled us to provide safe passage for countless at-risk Afghans.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The road ahead is as ambitious as it is necessary. The challenges we face demand continued innovation, collaboration, and compassion. But they also hold the promise of transformation — for individuals, communities, and the world. In 2025, we aim to expand our focus on supporting women, girls, and marginalized populations from Afghanistan, both those displaced within and beyond its borders, many of whom face unimaginable challenges under Taliban rule. We remain steadfast in advocating for the Government of Canada to uphold its moral obligations, ensuring that those with enduring relationships to Canada during its long engagement in Afghanistan are not left behind.</image:caption>

<image:title>Impact Stories Blog - Empowering newcomers to navigate the path to Canadian citizenship - In August 2021, when the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, the ensuing political, economic, and humanitarian crisis disrupted millions of lives. In response, Canada committed to welcoming at least 40,000 Afghan refugees. Three years later, many of these newcomers are eligible to apply for citizenship. However, recent statistics reveal a concerning trend: the citizenship rate among immigrants has dropped sharply, from 75.4% in 1996 to 45.7% in 2021. Language barriers, digital literacy challenges, and financial constraints contribute to this decline.</image:title>
<image:caption>At Aman Lara, we are dedicated to empowering refugees and newcomers with the resources and guidance they need to navigate their pathway to Canadian citizenship and integrate fully into their new communities. In this interview, I share insights and practical advice to support applicants on their citizenship journey.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Q. Do you have any parting thoughts? Citizenship is more than a status; it represents the culmination of efforts to integrate and thrive in a new country. This year, many Afghans supported by Aman Lara have reached out for information on applying for Canadian citizenship, recognizing the benefits of having a Canadian passport. They are eager to see their families, especially their children, gain citizenship and fully embrace life in Canada. At Aman Lara, we take immense pride in ensuring newcomers are equipped to meet the citizenship requirements and develop a true sense of belonging. We aim to support them in seeing Canada as a home for themselves and future generations.</image:caption>

<image:title>Impact Stories Blog - Redefining refugee support through economic inclusion and partnerships - Redefining refugee resettlement: A renewed approach to economic empowerment</image:title>
<image:caption>Aman Lara’s evolving strategy emphasizes shifting the refugee resettlement /settlement paradigm beyond conventional humanitarian aid to one that prioritizes personal agency, self-sufficiency, and economic inclusion. By challenging the outdated notion that refugees burden host communities, we aim to showcase their role as essential contributors to the economy. In Canada, refugees bring valuable skills and talent that fuel job creation and growth. Our commitment to unlocking this potential is exemplified through partnerships with organizations like Helmets to Hardhats (H2H) and Canada’s Building Trade Unions. Together, we are providing recently resettled refugees with meaningful employment opportunities in skilled trades. These efforts enhance Canada’s workforce diversification and support refugees in building new lives, promoting integration, economic participation, and long-term stability.</image:caption>

<image:title>Impact Stories Blog - A perspective on the ongoing gender crisis in Afghanistan - by: Nadia Hashimi, Program Manager</image:title>
<image:caption>The Taliban's recent enforcement of their 'Vice and Virtue' law has plunged Afghan women into a deepening crisis. For those of us who have lived under the Taliban's oppressive rule, the implementation of this law resurrects haunting memories of fear and restriction. In June of this past year, in Kabul, I experienced a chilling encounter with the vice and virtue police, who were clad in white overcoats reminiscent of doctors. They scrutinized me from head to toe. My mask was missing, and my shoes didn’t cover my feet per the previous regulations. They glanced at my feet but said nothing. The fear was tangible even then, knowing that any minor infraction could lead to harsh penalties. As I reflected on the impending impact of the new law on Afghan women and thought about how my encounter with the vice and virtue police could have escalated to severe repercussions, I found myself searching for information on the current gender crisis in Afghanistan. The facts I uncovered sadly confirmed what I already knew deep down: women’s rights in Afghanistan have all but disappeared, and the situation is growing even more dire.</image:caption>

<image:caption>To add to this chaos, the daughters were in a constant state of stress and worry due to threats their family received linked to their father's involvement in supporting the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in Afghanistan. He was the vice president and the last rightful owner of Tundra Security Consulting Afghanistan (SCA), an Afghan security company contracted by the Department of National Defence to stand on guard outside Canadian military forward operating bases. These connections to Canada exposed the girls to their father’s bi-weekly intimidation and beatings by the Taliban on their doorstep. Beyond the jeopardy imposed on their future due to gender, their father's life remained under constant threat due to his association with Canada. Witnessing this harsh treatment of her father by the Taliban for over two years, Muska courageously took it upon herself to reach out to Aman Lara for help where we supported and guided her in navigating all the necessary steps for their safe evacuation to a third country.</image:caption>
